I Am Legend vs. The Gospel of Jesus Christ: Compare and Contrast

This is the story of a special man. He lived in a world where humankind was infected by a disease that stripped people of their humanness, causing them to love the darkness and hate the light. He was gripped by a calling to save humankind from the disease. He himself was immune from the disease, and he knew that the answer to the world's woes was located in his own person, in his body and in his blood. Having chosen to live in the midst of his infected brethren, he came to the painful realization that he would have to die at their hands in order to deliver to them the salvation of his blood.

The gospel of Jesus Christ?

No, the story of Dr. Robert Neville, the character played by Will Smith in the movie I Am Legend, which I watched on DVD last night.

The movie purposely attempts to echo the salvific theme of the gospel, from the "I Am" in the title to its Passion-esque conclusion:

I wasn't aware of this theme in the movie before watching it, so it kind of took me by surprise. And it got me to thinking. And thinking.

So for all you bible scholars who have watched the movie, here's your final exam question:

Compare and contrast I Am Legend with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The best answer (as judged by me) wins a free DVD of I Am Legend.

The "compare" part is easy. What I'm really looking for is the "contrast." In other words, if a non-believer were to say to you, "I just saw I Am Legend. You're a Christian, right? So what's the difference between what Will Smith's character did and what Jesus did? If the movie were true, and you were a survivor, would you be justified in thereafter proclaiming Dr. Neville as Lord and Savior?"

I have my own answer, but I'll save it until after the contest. All responses must be posted by 5:00 PST, Friday, May 9th.

Good luck.

Grace and Peace,
Raffi

Unfortunately, I'm ineligible for the contest. I've never watched the movie. But I watched the Youtube clip you linked and you're comment above and it sounds totally fascinating!

If the circumstances are right, I'll play the "I am Legend" movie with unbelievers at home as an entree point to a discussion about the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for pointing out the parallels.

    Pax.

Unless there's a sequel in which Neville ir raised from the dead, he is not the savior of the world, he's only the cure for this virus. If Neville's cure were to reverse all death and renew creation, we would have a savior. If not, we only have a limited foreshadowing of what salvation entails.

"I AM" is more than Legend.

Though mostly contrast, here are my thoughts:

While Christ condescended to live as one of us, loving us, and helping us, Smith, though in the midst of those infected, isolates himself, fears them, and looks down upon them is lesser beings (note Smith's comments about how inhuman they are when in fact it seems they display a love for others - when one allows himself to be burned by light when his female friend is captured).

While Christ gave his life for the many, Smith gives his life for the many, but at the same time takes the life of many to accomplish this.

While Christ gave his life out of love, Smith is driven to give his out of guilt and pride.

While Christ arose in victory, defeating forever the powers of this world, of evil, and of Satan, Will Smith dies at the hands of those under the diseases evil sway, and is defeated by them.

Smith is an incomplete Lord, offering no hope beyond better health, no empowerment from his continued involvement, and no peace from his reign.
